West Indies may have batted first this time, but otherwise the 2nd ODI against Zimbabwe was much the same as the first - a win for the WI, as expected, but the home team once again made life difficult for themselves and failed to put the sort of pressure on Zim’s youngsters that you would expect from them.
Zimbabwe’s bowlers did well to restrict WI to a gettable 242 from their 50 overs. Captain Brian Lara has been experimenting with the batting order this series, and the results haven’t been particularly impressive, while a lack of any real urgency from the West Indies batsmen (with the notable expection of Dwayne Smith) didn’t help any. Zim’s bowlers put on a disciplined display, but it was all for nought as the Zimbabwe batsmen yet again failed to do the job. Justice Chibhabha was once again the pick of the bunch, picking up his second ODI 50 in two matches before falling for 67, but it’s a telling statistic that “Zimbabwe’s” 2nd-highest scorer was Extras, with 21 - Chigumbura (13) and Mupariwa (16) were the only other players to reach double figures.
The series now moves on to Guyana for the 3rd ODI on 6 May. Here’s hoping some batting skills are delivered along the way.
