Bangladesh v Zimbabwe: 1st ODI

Bangladesh scored a convincing win in the first of 5 ODIs against Zimbabwe, thanks in large part to an unbeaten century by Shariar Nafees.

Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bat, and made a reasonable start with Taylor and Matsikenyeri putting on an opening stand of 52 before Razzak’s arrival triggered problems for Zimbabwe. The departure of Taylor with the score on 91 triggered a mini-collapse, with Masakadza and Chibhabha following close behind him to leave Zim struggling against Bangaldesh’s spinners on 100/5, and while the lower order did manage to put on some runs it was at a rate that was unlikely to trouble Bangladesh. Zimbabwe’s innings ended at 184/9.

Zimbabwe’s own spin attack did do a reasonable job of keeping the Bangladeshi run-rate low in the early overs, but with only 1 wicket falling in the innings (Mehrab Hossain Jr, who scored 13 of a 72-run opening partnership with Shahriar Nafees) the home side were never under any real pressure. The winning total was reached during the 46th over.

At least this time around, Zimbabwe’s batsmen didn’t completely humiliate themselves - their problems only began when they tried to push the run-rate on against the spin attack, which they’ve always seemed to struggle with, but at least most of them made a good effort. Williams and Masakadaza disappointed with the bat (2 & 3 respectively), but Williams at least made up for that with a good bowling performance (1/26 from his 10 overs). Bangladesh seem comfortable, however, which doesn’t bode well for Zim’s chances in the rest of the series.
Zimbabwe 184/9 (50 overs; Taylor 38, Razzak 4/330, Bangladesh 186/1 (45.3 overs; Nafees 105*, Williams 1/26). Bangladesh win by 9 wickets, lead series 1-0. Check below the cut for the scorecard.

Kenya Decline Invite to Play in Inter-Provincial One-Dayers

CricInfo reports that Kenya have declined an invitation from ZC to play in Zimbabwe’s domestic one-day Faithwear Cup competition. It had been hoped Kenya’s presence would help raise the standard of the competition, but the series clashes with the World Cricket League Division One tournament, which Kenya are hosting.

Julia Chibhabha Appointed Captain of Zim Women

Julia Chibhabha has been named captain of Zimbabwe’s side for the World Cup qualifiers in Kenya next week.

“It is really a great honour for me to lead the women’s team to this daunting challenge in Kenya. We never thought all our efforts as female cricketers would one day lead to this momentous occasion and we are all truly overwhelmed.”

“It might be our first time to participate in a competition of such a high magnitude but we are going all out for victory in all our games. We are going out there to prove ourselves and to make a statement that women’s cricket is here to stay. Deep down in my sub-conscience, and with the girls all playing so well, I really do believe we can beat the odds and go all the way to the final.”

Julia is elder sister to national side player Chamunorwa, and is also a qualified cricket coach and member of ZC’s scoring panel.

Bangladesh Draw First Blood in Twenty20 Match

Poor batting again did for Zimbabwe in today’s Twenty20 International against Bangaldesh - the first full Twenty20 match either side has played. Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to field, and restricted Bangladesh to a reasonable 166 despite quick-fire innings by Shahriar Nafees (25 from 17 balls) and Aftab Ahmed (28 from 18 balls), with Prosper Utseya back to his miserly best, conceding only 25 runs from his 4 overs.

Only three Zim batsmen put up much of a show, though, with Matsikenyeri (15) Masakadza (35) and Williams (38) being the only ones to make it to double figures. The rest of the side fell cheaply as Zim collapsed to 123/9 from their 20 overs.

Williams will be pleased with his performance on his return to the national side, while Utseya again did his best to lead from the front. Brent put in a reasonable performance with the ball (2/40 from his 4 overs), but once again the fragile batting lineup has been Zim’s achilles heel. Allowance has to be made for the absence of regular top-order batsmen like Sibanda and Duffin, but this was still a disappointing performance. There’ll need to be a significant improvement if Zimbabwe are to have a chance in the 1st ODI on Thursday.
Bangladesh 166 (19.5 overs; Mortaza 36, Utseya 3/25). Zimbabwe 123/9 (20 overs; Williams 38, Razzak 3/15). Bangladesh win by 43 runs. Check below the cut for the match scorecard.
