This week’s Independent takes a look at Zimbabwe’s World Cup chances, and isn’t overly positive:
For a side that has lost all but one of their last 16 one-day internationals, next month’s ICC Cricket World Cup could prove too high a rostrum for Zimbabwe to provide a phenomenal riposte to many who have deemed them unfit for elite competition.
The world has been watching, and the world will be watching. Zimbabwe’s performance in West Indies will certainly influence the world’s view on the country’s return to Test cricket — scheduled for November.
The only relief now is that no one expects Zimbabwe to beat West Indies and Pakistan. But everyone will be worried about how they will dance to Calypso music.
As I mentioned in a comment to another post, Zimbabwe are seeded 9th for the World Cup - a seeding which means that there’s no dishonour in them not reaching the Super Eight, but they’ll expect to score a win against Ireland. If not, serious questions will need to be asked.
