Gauteng Win SAA Provincial Series Opener

A woeful first-innings batting display left Zimbabwe with an almost impossible task in their opening SAA Provincial Challenge match against Gauteng. With 7 batsmen failing to reach double figures, and only Regis Chakabva (64) and Steven Nyamuzinga (34) providing anything that could be described as "resistance". In reply, Gauteng were given a major boost by Dane Vilas' 93, while Trevor Garwe (3/54) and Graeme Cremer (4/113) led the Zimbabwean bowling figures - but Gauteng were still able to reach 346.

Zimbabwe's second innings was a huge improvement - it couldn't have been much worse, to be fair - with Alester Maregwede top-scoring with 58 on the way to Zim's total of 237 - a much more respectable total, but thanks to their huge first-innings lead, Gauteng were left needing only 61 to secure the win - and that was never in doubt.

Some honour restored in the second innings, then, but still a huge disappointment, and Zimbabwe will hopefully be looking to even the score in their one-day match on Sunday.
Result: Zimbabwe 169 (Chakabva 64, Burger 3/36) & 237 (Maregwede 58, das Neves 5/52), Gauteng 346 (Vilas 93, Cremer 4/113) & 62/1 (Symes 49*, Cremer 1/6). Gauteng win by 9 wickets.

Very surprised CSA aren't giving even occasional updates. A bit disappointing too.

Jean Symes is a gun. I'm scared he's going to make a double century...

Still no scores posted by either CSA or ZC. Very disappointing.

Cricket info got them

well seeing from 1st day report thier batting seems to really struggle exept chakbova and Nyamuzinga getting them to some score.they pulled things back with some wickets but they need to show better batting form to be remai competetive in the match.

Pathetic performance by the batsmen. Well, at least we know now why Duffin isn't in the national team. A first ball duck against Gauteng, wow.

Mawoyo, Duffin, Maregwede, all disappointing.

Credit to Chakabva though, his highest First Class score.

well looking from scorecards I think they have lost the 1 st match I think poor start by zimbabwe they need to work hard in upcoming matches to have some competetion.I think they should have atleast one more batsman in thier line up.by the way betetr secong innings performances but not consistence.

farhan, I agree. They need a batsman who is very technically correct and can really settle in and build an innings.

This is how I think the A team should look. (Craig Ervine is Sean's brother, I think he's still playing club cricket in Zimbabwe)

1. T. Duffin
2. T. Mawoyo
3. R. Butterworth
4. C. Ervine
5. A. Maregwede (capt, wk)
6. R. Chakabva
7. A. Cremer
8. B. Mahwire
9. T. Garwe
10. E. Rainsford
11. T. Kamungozi

That's 4 players with Test experience, 6 with ODI experience. Chakabva is the only remaining "unknown", and his performance in the Gauteng match warrant him to keep his spot.

Of course, it won't happen. The same XI will probably play in the next match.

I sure hope Butterworth cracks a ton in that warm up against Sri Lanka A, that would surely result in some selection changes.

well good selection that looks to be really really strong young team. though I still think Rainsford is still good enough to play in zim 1st eleven.looking from the scorecards it seems that these young zim players do have potential, what they need to apply themselves and probably get more experince to bat longer. there be 2 or 3 good players from this side for zim national team.

i also reckon craig should be given ago

well what is news on one dayer?. also what is news on 1 st match between zim and srilanka A.

No live coverage of either of today's matches - should be available later this evening. I'll post news when I have it...
