Chevrons Hammered by Dolphins as MTN Woes Continue

Chevrons barely put up a fight against the Dolphins in Durban last night. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Zim suffered their worst batting performance in quite some time - Sean Williams top-scored on 28 and received some support from opener Hamilton Masakadza (23), but apart from that the best word to describe the side was "woeful", as some order changes that saw Tatenda Taibu opening failed to work. The side were bowled out for 120 in the 36th over.

That was never going to be a target that the Chevrons could successfully defend - although a run of early wickets courtesy of Tawanda Mupariwa (4/24) that left the home side on 40/4 may have given the side some hope, Ahmed Amla (39*) and Jon Kent (36) took their side home for a 5-wicket win with over 16 overs remaining.

Full scorecard below the cut. Zimbabwe's next MTN match is against Titans, in Bulawayo on Sunday (24th).
Chevrons 120 (35.2/45 overs; Williams 28, Louw 5/27), Dolphins 121/5 (28.3/45 overs; Amla 39*, Mupariwa 4/24). Dolphins win by 5 wickets.

I thought the batting was reasonable in Pakistan but consistent scores of 218/222 and the like shows its a weak area. One day cricket is now an attacking form of cricket and scoring at 5 an over against franchise sides is just not it. Masakadza has improved as an opener and Sibanda's powers have declined maybe bring back Taylor as an opener because he has also failed to strengthen the middle order maybe they should be swapped around. The bowling was initially weak but the Addition of Mpariwa who is clearly our main strike bowler has improved that department. The Scheduling of the games is also crazy couldnt the ZC avoided the situation when the team plays 2 games in 2 days on most occassions unlike most teams. Mark Vermuleun is now available maybe we should try him as an opener he could be pretty useful. Zimbabwe is not being outclassed but then it does your confidence no good to loose to franchise sides. The coach must tell the guys to target 6 an over and where is the confidence ....Sport Pshychologist needed.

Yes, 6 an over is needed. Honestly, Zimbabwe won't win this tournament (barring miracles I suppose) so they might as well go for broke.

Stick Sibanda and Taylor together at the top of the order and tell them to play like Gilchrist and Hayden - play their shots and take risks in the first 10 overs. It probably won't pay off, but I'd sure as hell rather see Sibanda go for broke getting caught in the deep rather than get an outside edge to first slip.

Maybe time try some firepower.

1) Sibanda
2) Taylor

These are our two most attacking openers. PLAY THEM THERE.

3) Williams

Classy number 3 and has no trouble finding the fence. Is able to score quickly without getting out and taking *too many* risks it seems.

4) Chigumbura

Why not.

5) Masakadza

Seems to be scoring in the mid 80's (strike rate) recently. Odds are he'll be at the crease by the 10th over anyway.

6) Taibu

Not doing enough in my opinion, but seeing as he won't be dropped might as well play him at 6.

7) Chakabva/Dabengwa/etc

Someone who can score quickly in the last few overs.

how about this batting order

1) Sibanda
2) B Taylor
3) Williams
4) Taibu
5) Vermeulen he can be quite destructive at the end of an innings
6) Steven Nyamuzinga I think hes really aggressive just try him he looks really a big hitter plus he can bowl
7) Chigumbura who can really turn it on at the end

may be give blignaut a recall strydom, rinke , coventry we got the big hittere their is also ryan ervine just play them.

Vermeulen, Blignaut, Strydom, Rinke, Coventry, Ervine... You suggest ZC get the CIO to round them up and get them to play at gunpoint? None of these players are part of the current ZC setup at any level - some of them haven't played since God alone knows when, others have issues with ZC that will need to be addressed before ZC are ready to select them or the player is ready to make themself available. This isn't a dreamworld - there are real issues affecting selection that you don't seem to realise exist. It's fine to suggest possible lineups, but - and I've asked this of you before - please keep your suggestions to players who are currently available.

if u are looking for a star strike bowler with pace height accuracy which zim lacks just look at kyle jarvis who i think is the real deal hes a potential shane bond for zim.

Jarvis: not enough (or any) experience at top level - they'd need to play him in the likes of Zimbabwe Provinces for a while. Dumping him into the senior team at this stage would probably ruin him.

I'd assume he'll get a few games in the Logan Cup, assuming it goes ahead - let's see how he performs there before we get too excited...
